PSA 11/8/24 Melting Snow

City of Las Vegas - Winter Storm Update

Melting Snow = Flood Risk!

The snow may be stopping, but the danger isn't over yet, Las Vegas! As temperatures rise, we expect significant snowmelt, which could lead to flooding in low-lying areas and near waterways.

Here's the latest:

·        Weather:  Friday will be partly sunny with a high near 34°F. Temperatures will drop starting this evening.

·         Road Conditions: Roads remain icy and snow-packed in many areas. Please avoid all unnecessary travel. Check the NMDOT website for the latest road closures and conditions:  https://www.nmroads.com/mapIndex.html

·        Warming Center: The Abe Montoya Warming Center will close at 11:00am.  Public assistance can be requested through (505) 425-7504.

·        Flood Watch: Be alert for potential flooding as the snow melts. Avoid areas prone to flooding, such as:

· Streams, creeks, and arroyos.

· Low-lying areas and underpasses.

· Neighborhoods that have had previous flooding challenges.

Stay Safe Around Water:

· Never drive through flooded roadways. Water can be deeper than it appears, and your vehicle could be swept away.

· Keep children and pets away from waterways. Water levels can rise rapidly and unexpectedly.

· Be cautious near bridges and culverts. These areas can be particularly dangerous during flooding.

The City is here to help:

· Our Emergency Operations Center remains activated, and we are closely monitoring the situation.

· Public Works crews are working to clear storm drains and mitigate flooding risks.

· We are prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise.

What you can do:

· Stay informed: Monitor weather updates and heed any warnings or advisories.

· Report flooding: If you see flooding, please report it to the City by calling (505) 425-7504.

· Prepare your property: The Gallinas River level is projected to rise due to snow melt.  The City is advising property owners to create water diversion efforts.  Clear snow and ice away from your home's foundation to prevent water damage and remove snow from driveways and sidewalks.

Let's work together to stay safe during this melt!
