PSA 7/2/24 The City of Las Vegas to Still Host 4th of July Fireworks Display

Las Vegas, NM – The City of Las Vegas has decided to continue hosting the 4th of July Fireworks Display after careful consideration. City officials cancelled all 4th of July Fiesta activities on June 25, including the parade, as the water crisis continued to worsen which led to the mandatory closures of non-essential businesses.

Over the past week, hundreds of semi-trucks filled with potable water and bottle water have flowed into the community day and night to help supplement the city’s water reserves and minimize usage. City of Las Vegas Mayor David Romero, City Manager Tim Montgomery, City employees and the Governing Body have been working in conjunction with their consultant, the Sulzer Group. Chief Executive Officer Deborah Sulzer of the Sulzer Group, is highly specialized in disaster planning, mitigation and recovery management and will continue to work with City to ensure immediate, short-term and long-term measures are in place to protect the City’s water sources.

“We had to act quickly. Our city was in an emergency situation and we just couldn’t rely only on State and Federal resources. If it wasn’t for Deborah and her team, I am not sure where we would be right now, says City Manager Tim Montgomery.

Although the water situation is still ongoing, the city is nearing stabilization and is working on acquiring more long-term water resources. Non-essential businesses have been allowed to reopen, with the exception of car washes and laundromats.

Despite the ongoing water concerns, City of Las Vegas Fire Chief Steven Spann emphasized the firework display will be in a controlled location and safety measures are in place to prevent any risks associated with the water shortage. “We have noticed over the years, during the City’s firework show, it is at least 35-45 minutes where fireworks are not set off all over the city, so we can focus on one area,” says Chief Spann.

The 4th of July Fireworks Display will take place for the community’s enjoyment on Thursday July 4, 2024 at Dusk at the New Mexico Highlands Golf Course for the general public and is free to attend.
